When all your dolls become LEs ...

I started with one doll, which was an MSD kit.  I had her assembled and painted by Volks, and she arrived to me posed in her little silver box.  She was the same cookie cutter sculpt with the same cookie cutter paint job that anyone in Japan could buy, but I thought she was lovely.

My second doll was a limited edition doll.  She was the second model of that doll, but she came with an outfit and wig unique from the first, and since she was an LE I had loved whenever I saw her in the showroom, I had to have her.

Since then I've gotten a few more dolls.  Mark was a regular model, and so was Dali and Muffin.  Chrom was LE, but Saiph was also regular, and Chika was a Volks YoSD (which are technically always LE).

The difference between a regular model and an LE is mostly availability.  A lot of LEs get repackaged and resold later, like my second doll.  "Limited Edition" doesn't mean they'll never sell it again, but it means that you'll probably pay more for it on the second hand market and that you can't just hop online and get another one.

And that ability to just hop online and get another was always something I liked.  Of course the companies are usually pretty good about things like repairing a broken doll or ordering you a replacement part, but what if something truly devastating happened?  When there was a big earthquake in Japan, Volks was good about caring for the broken dollies, which is a genuine concern if something you paid $1000 dollars for gets damaged in a natural disaster.  You want to know that if something truly devastating--natural disaster or a fire or a theft--happens, you can replace your doll.

But something weird happened.  Marry, the MSD model I first purchased, was taken off the market.  Suddenly those first two dolls became dolls that were unavailable, instead of just the second one being limited in nature.  My Pipos doll ... I can't even find it on their website anymore.  One of my Soom dolls is LE anyway, but another, the Mecha Angel, was recently discontinued.  And even my other regular SD10 Mark was discontinued by Volks.  Volks discontinued all of their regular line of dolls.

So basically I'm left with one doll that could be re-purchased if need be, and she's not my mostest favoritest (although I like all of my dolls).  Owning rare things that no one else can buy has a certain appeal to it, but at the same time it's anxiety-producing.  Every 6 months or so I have the Bad Dream where dolls--ones I never actually bought in real life and that probably don't exist--melt or get damaged somehow.

I have an LE on its way soon.  I'm still paying her off in installments, and I consider her my "last doll" even though I think I'd like a YoSD centaur too.  Or another doll her size (Dollmore Elysia is nice).  Or maybe I could cap it at some number like 10 (wait ... no, this one makes 9).  But it's weird how this has become like the end of an era, with Volks no longer producing their standard line and Soom getting rid of the Mecha Angels.  Pipos has changed to producing lots of humanoid sculpts in addition to slightly more anthro animals than the one I own.

Poof.  Now most of my dolls are LE.

Except for one.

Edit:  I'd still like an Iplehouse Asa.  Actually, I feel like these days I'm really branching out to different companies.  I have a majority Volks, but I do have Luts, Soom, Pipos and then Dollmore waiting on my $$$$.  It's kind of fun to sample different body sculpts.

  1. Haunting dreams of broken Dollfies Senpai? XD Premium, One of a kind, Limited Edition; I can't resist Boutique dolls! Your collection only gets more awesome, I'm so jealous of your Dollfies!

I always keep an eye open for rare and valuable dolls but they only choose to appear the moment I'm broke. Right after buying an expensive something else, a rare Dollfie will appear to taunt me T_T. I could have had that emergency Christmas sale 30,000 Yen Fate/EXTRA Dollfie (The Prettiest Dollfie in my professional opinion) or an $800 custom made Gackt BJD if not for my poor decisions. Luckily, I'm having a doll related something custom made that should more than make up for the disappointment =D. Maybe you'd find it interesting too.

May your new Dollmore be worthy to bask in the glory surrounded by all that limited edition-ness!

  2. I feel like my new Dollmore will be worthy to have *other* dolls bask in its glory, since it's literally the size of a small child. The doll comes with its own carrying bag, which is good since I get nervous about the idea of something that big and tempting sitting around in my room (even though the kids are technically not allowed in here).

Oh no, now I'll start having dreams like THAT. Sticky little fingers dropping heavy resin heads. The last dream I had involved me taking a bunch of dolls (always kind of ugly dolls that don't really exist but that I spent a lot of money on regardless) and tossing them in a tote bag. Then I dropped that bag on the floor for some reason. <--WOULD NEVER HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE. Gah, why can't the SEs just remain SEs??? I want to get my MSD Marry a faceup and I'm nervous about mailing her head anywhere. Was bad enough moving across oceans three times.

I hope your dolly turns out to be everything you hope it to be. I know that if you like the Dollfie Dream aesthetic of more anime-styled dolls, Luts has a few that are SE. Dunno if you've seen these, so I'll linkylinky here.

  3. How are you this weekend Senpai? =D That is such a beautiful design and the price is nice too! I just ordered a new toy so unfortunately I'm broke for the moment and can't buy this doll. =,[

I never learned how to save, *Sigh* sad because I'm the kind of person who sees an expensive toy I can't afford and all I ever do is think about it. Life would be easier if I practiced some restraint but instead I've made a list of things to buy when I make it rich. XS

I wanted to ask what mediator site are you using when ordering things from Japan? Personally, I've been using Japonica Market for the past couple of years. Mr. Yoshiyuki Tajima-san is a very alright man. The service has been consistently reliable, the fees are fairly reasonable and the shipping time is rapidly quick!

  4. Saving is tough. Maybe you could start a special savings account and throw $25 or $50 in there every time you have a bit of cash. I've done just that for my Trinity.

I don't think I've ever used a mediator site. I remember that there were a few that used to be common for people who, for instance, wanted to order things off of Yahoo Japan Auctions. I guess that because I was in Japan, then moved for school and then had no money to blow on nice things ... I kind of got out of the habit of buying stuff like that.

Fortunately most doll sites will ship straight to the US. Not that I've ordered anything lately besides the big doll.

But I'm glad you found one you like! I know that's always a concern with those sites.
